WHAT IS REMAPPING?
All modern cars and vans will have an ECU (engine control unit). The ECU is basically a computer that controls how the engine works, a bit like a brain. But the default settings – or maps – are not necessarily the best they could be, as manufacturers who sell their cars around the world have to take into account different things.
These could include sub-standard fuels, extremes in temperature and altitude, differing emission laws and even the possibility that vehicle may not be serviced on a regular basis and in accordance with the manufacturers recommended instructions. Car makers are also known deliberately to limit the performance of their cars through the ECU so they can release faster models at a later date, with just a few software changes and a much higher price tag.
Remapping is a completely safe process (if carried out by professionals) as it is just giving the engine the performance it should have had in the first place before all the compromises were applied to the original programming. Every engine will have its own unique map and by adjusting this we can fine tune the characteristics of the engine; unleashing more power and in many cases reduce fuel consumption too. Enhanced performance Remapping is intended to make the most of your car by overwriting the ECU’s default settings with new software, which can be programmed to enhance the car’s overall performance.
It usually takes between 30 minutes and an hour, so you can drop your vehicle off on your way to work, and collect it the same day. You should notice an immediate improvement in the speed and power of your car.
